A seguito della scomparsa, nel 2004, di Umberto Scerrato, l’IsIAO ha incaricato Maria Vittoria Fontana di mettere insieme tutti i progetti islamici rimasti incompiuti per portarne a termine lo studio e pubblicarli.

Furono individuati due progetti specificamente archeologici (lo scavo di Ghazni in Afghanistan e quello di Udegram in Pakistan), due progetti di catalogazione architettonica (le moschee lignee del Pakistan e l’architettura religiosa in Yemen) e un progetto etnografico (i manufatti dell’artigianato ligneo in Pakistan).

Maria Vittoria Fontana ha nominato un responsabile per ciascun progetto. Il responsabile di Islamic Ghazni. An IsIAO Archaeological Project in Afghanistan è la Dr. Roberta Giunta (Università L’Orientale di Napoli); il responsabile di Islamic Udegram. An IsIAO Archaeological Project in Pakistan è la Dr. Alessandra Bagnera (Università della Tuscia); il responsabile di The Wooden Mosques. An IsIAO Architectural Project in Pakistan è il Dr Francesco Noci (Sapienza, Roma), il responsabile di The Islamic Religious Architecture of Yemen. An IsIAO Cataloguing Project in Yemen è la Prof. Giovanna Ventrone (già Università L’Orientale di Napoli); il responsabile di The Wooden Artifacts. An IsIAO Ethnographic Project in Pakistan è la Dr Ilaria E. Scerrato (etnografa, Roma). Ciascun responsabile ha organizzato un team di specialisti e giovani studiosi.
