Lebanese-Italian Project in the Region of Tyre
The Lebanese-Italian Project in the Region of Tyre was established in 2019. It is an international collaboration between Sapienza University of Rome, the Lebanese University, and the Lebanese Directorate-General of Antiquities with the ultimate objective of exploring patterns of settlement, landscape use, and water resources management in the region to the south (Shawakeer, Ras el-Ain) and east (Tell Mashouk) of the present-day Tyre peninsula. By means of an integrated methodology, encompassing the study of sources, remote sensing analysis, pedestrian survey, and sondages, the Project aims to accomplish a systematic exploration of this critical landscape in the ancient development of Tyre and of archaic urbanism in southern Lebanon. In addition, parallel to and in combination with archaeological research, the Project seeks to elaborate strategies for the protection and promotion of archaeological and cultural assets according to international best practices and through the engagement of the local community.
