Tra epigrafia e topografia: indice ragionato delle provenienze delle iscrizioni latine di Roma
This research project has as its goal the redaction of a database that registers the provenance, i.e. the geographical origin of the some 40,000 Latin inscriptions which have been found in Rome. The scholarly purpose is to restore these ancient texts to their original archaeological context and thus to bring an important contribution to our understanding of the topography of ancient Rome. The texts which are published in the standard work of consultation, the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum vol. VI, are organized according to the content of the inscription and within most categories are presented in alphabetical order according to the name of the main character.
As a source for our knowledge of Classical antiquity the ancient Latin inscriptions of Rome are equal in value to the classical literary authors, and the objective of this research project is to make the inscriptions accessible to a wide range of scholars, not just to expert epigraphers. Collecting information on the provenance of each inscription, which among other things means consulting the Archives of the “Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Roma” and the “Archivio di Stato”, will enable us to update and improve the individual entries in the CIL vol. VI in important ways. Furthermore, the project will allow us to create indices of the provenances that include modern toponomastic terms (such as modern street names).
