Cultural Heritage of the Near and Middle East, and Africa

The English language MA course “Cultural Heritage in the Mediterranean and Western Asia” offers advanced tuition on the cultural heritage belonging to the vast region which includes the Near and Middle East, from the Indus river to the Nile valley, and the lands of Northern and Eastern Africa. It aims to offer a unique training on the ancient and medieval civilizations that characterized these lands, addressing archaeology as well as epigraphy, history,  history of arts, philology, literary and religious studies, each characterized by its own solid theoretical and methodological foundations, while at the same time open to multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity, which  combine in a unique holistic approach to the diverse subjects and fields.

Our students will choose between three different learning pathways respectively characterized  by a fully archaeological approach, by a more comprehensive historic methodology, or by a specialized epigraphic-philological attitude. All different approaches share a common attention to the regulatory and administrative aspects of cultural heritage management, as well as to the vast and complex issue of the conservation, protection, and promotion of cultural heritage. This approach has been  chosen because our MA degree aims at providing students with a scientific profile spendable on the job market.

Entirely in line with Sapienza – University of Rome’s guidelines for the internationalization of teaching courses, our English language MA degree aims to offering students from countries in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) area and neighboring lands a specialized educational and training program and, at the same time, to provide rare professional skills for Italians and Europeans who want to acquire specific knowledge on the cultural heritage of these lands.

The skills acquired in our MA course can be appropriately used to compete for leading roles in research and promotion of cultural heritage in national and international bodies that promote the study and protection of cultural heritage as means to attain sustainable development defined by the Sustainable Development Goals that have been described in  Agenda 2030.
